Innovative stretch hood wins another award

Der Grüne Punkt, Nestlé Germany and DUO PLAST jointly win the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Award 2025.

Cologne, 21st January 2025. Der Grüne Punkt – Duales System Deutschland GmbH, together with Nestlé Deutschland AG and DUO PLAST AG, has won the prestigious WorldStar Packaging Award 2025 in the ‘Packaging Materials and Components’ category for its innovative stretch hood packaging. The three companies’ innovation was already honored with the German Packaging Award in 2024.

The now also internationally awared packaging marks a milestone as it contains post-consumer recyclates (PCR) from household packaging waste for the first time. The middle layer of the newly developed stretch hoods contains up to 20 percent Systalen® LDPE recyclate sourced from the Yellow Bag or Yellow Bin. This is the first time that PCR from household collection has been used in such a sophisticated product.

The stretch hood, which was developed for the safe transport and load securing of all common pallet formats in the food, chemical and construction industries, offers a CO2 reduction of 22% compared to conventional virgin plastic*. This achievement highlights both the sustainability and cost-saving advantages for the industry.

“Using PCR from the Yellow Bag in stretch hoods was almost unthinkable until now,” explains Thorsten Weber, Head of Application and Production Technology at Der Grüne Punkt. “By integrating at least 20 percent PCR into our packaging, we have taken a significant step towards a circular economy and proactively met the ambitious recyclate content targets set out in Article 7 of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).”

This success once again demonstrates the importance of innovation and collaboration along the value chain in shaping a more sustainable future for packaging. The WorldStar Packaging Award 2025 recognizes the commitment as a decisive step forward that paves the way for future developments in the use of PCR in the packaging industry.

The official award ceremony will be held in May 2025 in Milano-Italy  during IPACK IMA Packaging Show.
